Q: What is your official job title? A: Community Manager.
Q: How long have you worked for AWOL? A: Three years.
Q: What did you do pre-AWOL? A: I was a web designer for a company in Lancaster.
Q: Describe a typical day at AWOL. A: On days where we don’t have an event, I set up the events and branding on the AWOL website, create and send out marketing emails, event flyers and other marketing assets. I am also responsible for sorting all the memory cards for the events and making sure the photographers are good to go.
Q: What do you do on race day? A: My role on a race day starts once the event is finished. I liase with the chip timers and get the results, import them and any pre ordered purchases, and then send out the “Photos Live” email to all the participants of the event. Once this is done, I keep an eye on the different social media channels and support desk for any athlete queries.
Q: What do you love about your job? A: I like all of the different events that we cover. It’s great being at an event watching people crossing the finish line.
Q: Name one thing in the industry that you would like to fix. A: I wish I could fix the weather, there’s nothing worse than being at an event and it hammering down.
Q: What’s the best thing about working at AWOL? A: The feeling you get after a big event, when all the photos are live and you receive great feedback from the athletes. It makes all the hard work and planning worthwhile. We have a great team who work well together to make sure we plan everything to the last detail, nothing is missed.
Q: When you’re not working what are you doing? A: Outside of work, football takes up most of my time. I am involved with my son’s football team and manage an adult team on a Saturday.
Q: Favourite book/film? A: The Great Escape (the one with Steve McQueen).
Q: Who would play you in a movie about your life? A: Ermmmm not sure really… maybe Kevin Hart!
Q: What’s your go-to karaoke song? A: Whole of the Moon by The Waterboys.
